What is “Burl”

Burl Wood has some of the most outstanding figure and character. One might find themselves in a mesmerizing gaze staring into the patterns of a piece of burl wood furniture. But what is it?

It is a collection of very dense tree cells that has formed in an unordinary way. Made up of callous tissue cells and undeveloped buds which have folded in on each other and divide over and over again forming a round bulge on the tree instead of sprouting out into a limb or branch.

What causes this? Many studies have been done and are still ongoing but as of now, the experts cant pinpoint what causes a tree to grow like this. but dont worry, they dont not harm or affect the tree in any negative way! They are simply part of the tree just like any other branch or limb.
Never cut burls off of trees! This can seriously harm the tree, and may cause it to die.

The burl wood that we are lucky to get the opportunity to work with at Seed to Sky Wood Co. is specifically sourced from trees that have fallen due to natural causes. We work with small urban sawyers who save beautiful trees from being turned into landfill, woodchips and firewood. and instead, they process them into beautiful slabs of wood.

We love our trees and hope you do too. Thats why we partnered up with Onetreeplanted.org and donate proceeds from each sale to planting new trees in areas most in need of reforestation.
